1993 Corrado SLC VR6 Turbo |
| |
This car belongs to a very good customer of ours. He picked it up a few weeks ago to drive for the summer while we finish building his 20v big turbo mk3 jetta. He definitely choose the correct car to build. This 1993 SLC has low miles, is rust free, and came with a bunch of goodies.
Before purchasing this car he knew that it was going to need some sorting out. The car came with a pieced together turbo kit, but the car never ran right. Poor turbo software, a blow off valve, and a hole in the boost tubing were only some of the issues that the car had. Basically the car was not much faster then a non turbo VR6...sad, but true. Our goal is to make this car 100% reliable and fast enough to put a smile on your face.

How it used to look

Crooked intercooler fitment

The older intercooler kit. This style runs under the oil pan to get from the turbo to the intercooler,. The problem with this style is if your car is lowered, the boost tubing is the lowest part of the car. We will be ditching this setup and building a new setup that will not run under the car.

We have been picking away on the intercooler kit over the past few days. Here is the progress we made thus far.
As you can see the previous owner hacked the bumper reinforcement to fit the old intercooler. We made a custom bracket to mount the intercooler to the radiator support so we can replace the bumper reinforcement in the future and not have to remount the intercooler.

We clocked the turbo to run the intercooler in the engine bay vs. under the car.

3" to 2.5" reducer coming off the throttle body.

The passenger side piping tacked together.

We have finished all the intercooler fabrication work. Tomorrow we will tig weld everything, smooth it, and paint it. We are extremely happy with how this intercooler kit is coming out.

Kind of a delayed update on the corrado. We finished the car last week and got it on the road. It runs awesome and is surprisingly quick even on 10 lbs of boost. We are extremely satisfied with how this build came out. Right now the car is back in the shop for a few misc. things like painting and installing the new hood, european smoked ecodes, and to crank up the boost :-)
Out with the old...

In with the new...custom 3" all the way back
