Carbon buildup on the intake valves is very common on the FSI and TFSI motors. This is due to the fact that these motors have a direct inject fuel system. On a normal fuel injected motor the fuel is sprayed on the back of the intake valves which keep them very clean and free of carbon buildup.
The buildup can cause a lack of power and random misfiring. The portion above the divider is what is used when the car is at idle. If you look at the pictures you can see this portion is almost plugged solid!
